have a look at some of my works, read my thoughts ; you can also
meet the people i love spending time with..
you can also send me a few words on what you think of my works.
“ To begin with, you put a huge badly made illustration that cover the entire screen with no content showing. Do you really expect me to read on???”
- Heya Basu
Well this is what my family friend told me when i started designing this site. But then what does she know? :P when i was working with my previous employer, i had too many constraints when it came to working on sites, mostly to do with boring brand guide lines.. Now that i am doing up my site, it's time to experiment.
The original idea was to have a single page website that shows my interests and my work; and i didn't want to use a convnetional navigation, just hyperlinks from one seciton to another.. it didnt go that well, i ended up putting the iphone for easier jump between sections.
You might be wondering... why such an odd domain name?
yes.. i have been asked that a lot, thing is i am 6'3 and i literally have a very different view point on things, i am sure all my friends agree on that. this is a vent to spit out those opinions and thoughts.
So there my friend, i (sunil r shenoy) want to warn you about my spelling mistakes and grammatical logic. Please dont get influenced by it, i am trying to improve my writing skills by articulating my thoughts. If you find anything interesting, do tell me.
i got a few emails last week, by friends who wanted some advice...
Dear Aerialview,
I am leaving for the US on work for 2 years. I love my mom a lot and i want to buy her a computer which is easy for her to use. It shouldn't have a mouse or keyboard, shouldn't crash, should be portable and should let her check mail, skype with a press of a button.
please help me.
regards
Arvind
here is another letter

Luckily for me, my reply to both these guys were the same. buy an ipad.
isnt this an overgrown iphone?
Well yes, it comes with the same processor and os as the iphone, and the applications from the iphone are completely compatable with the ipad.
so whats the point again? why not buy an iphone instead?
the answer to this is very simple. the ipad is definitely not a desktop or laptop replacement. its something in between a smart phone and a laptop. its very thin and very light. i used the 64gb 3g version, i couldnt access the itunes to download applications, but my boss who owns it had installed a few apps and a few novels. the experience of capacitive touch on such a big screen was amazing...
i wont go over the application list, developers have made applications for every possible thing. but to test the practicality of the device, i put on a novel on it and gave it to my grandmom who recently turned 80. and guess what? she thought it was a book. she read about 10 pages by flipping the pages on the screen. she later realized that its a device and not a book. so the ipad passed my grandmom-test.
in the second test, i configured my mom's email and skype id and asked her to use it. she went on a mail checking frenzy, not sure how many mails she read, but she was engrossed in it. mail inbox was easy to use and intutive. skype was exactly like its on the desktop so she didnt have any problems there either
i dont want to start talking about the touch screen and the beautiful browsing experience and the 4000+ apps in the app store, cos i will sound biased.
i see a lot of potential in this device. imagine sitting at home on a weekend, you are tired of using the laptop and want to be entertined, say you want to watch a movie or you want to listen to you favorite playlist while you read a downloaded novel that you always wanted to read, all this on a lazy afternoon, having chilled beer or ice tea.
you see, thats the poing in having a gadget, i am trying to find a metaphor to explain what the ipad is. Well i can start by saying its something like "falling in love". when you are around this girl you love, you feel comfortable, you feel pampered. and when she is not around, life goes on... but you would rather be with her.
If you cant connect with this, i can only tell one thing. dont buy it! its not for you. you will be just wasting your money, you can instead become my freind
but if you see what i am on about, when you get yours, please buy me one too!
after reading hundreds for hours, the reviews on nokia 5800 on mouthshut.com and few other review sites and after watching all the video postings on youtube on n5800, i finally took the plunge.
bought myself a nokia 5800 from Girias who happened to give me the best price for my phone. spent Rs.13,640 on the piece and got a SENNHEISER headphones worth 2 grand (INR). so here is what i think about the phone.
to begin with, as soon as i started using the phone, i realized what a pleasure Symbian S60 v5 OS touch really is. i was using Sony Ericsson for almost 6 months now. the touch feature on the phone has been utilized to the max.. only problem is occasional single touch/double touch for selection which you will get used to in very little time. the keyboards are intuitive, i am used to the normal alphanumeric keypad with dictionary switched on. you also have a full qwerty keyboard which is big and easy to use.
then came the unlimited internet on the WIFI.. god i love the internet especially on my phone.. i installed apps which i am not sure i will ever use.. for example, i installed an app to toss a coin, incase i have to make a decisions and i dont have a coin in hand. social networking apps which are there in hundreds are a delight. The unlimited GPRS connection from airtel for Rs.99 a month made my life easy.
i am speaking business now.. i am online on Nimbuzz which basically is gtalk, skype, twitter, msn, windows live in one app.. i can make calls with the phone to any online user and chat with them till my battery dies. even better is googlemaps latitude..i can never get lost ever again. the GPS on the phone is quite accurate to a few meters from where you are. i can just about do a search on the app and it tells you exact location of your search and also give you directions to get there.. superb app..
joikuspot turns your phone into a wifi hub incase the internet at your home is down and you have to send a quck mail from your lappy, if you are not comfortable doing the same from your phone :) the phone browser supports java script and flash.. yes.. flash videos streaming on your phone.. also the screen is of 16:9 aspect ratio.. you can convert just about any avi file into mp4 with free video to ipod converter (http://nokia5800.net/forum/topic/convert-divx-and-xvid-videos-to-your-5800) and enjoy your favorite tv shows on your phone just incase youtube doesnt already have it.
the list in endless.. i can go on and on about the apps.. best part, there is just about a new app every single day.. the phone is not perfect i admit, the build quality as not that great, the phone camera is so so, the phone hangs occasionally, sometimes the phone keypad doesnt lock, but then i realize i get 3g, GPS, wifi and an amazing ovi app store with many free apps just for Rs.13,640 there is a limit for greed you know...
i have used the phone for over 7 months now. and you know what i realize? many people have compared the nokia 5800 with the iphone.i strongly feel the iphone is in a league of its own. the major difference is the apps.. the iphone apps are completely thought through and the designs and userfriendliness of the apps are amazing.. nokia on the other hand.. well.. not quite there yet. offscr technologies (www.offscr.com) are doing a great job..
There is no comparison between capacitive touch and resistance touch, iphone comes with capacitive touch which is really easy to use and nokia phones come with resistance touch (painful at times)
if you are looking for a good experience, save up money and go for the iphone.. if you are willing to compromise like i did, go for the 5800 its not all that bad :)My verdict? well the nokia tube costs half the price of the iphone and i strongly feel its half way there!
I have read countless reviews trying to decide what to buy – an Xbox 360 or the Playstation 3. Both have a wonderful pedigree and both have their own pros and cons.
What was I looking for?
Yes, it’s a very simple wish list. And the most interesting thing is that neither the Xbox 360 nor the PS 3 would meet my requirements. The Logitech MOMO steering wheel is not compatible with both consoles; both hard drives hold only 80 gigs and it is not even compatible with my existing 5.1 amp. Go figure.
So I set out on a quest to find that goddamn console and I didn’t have to look too far. The answer was barely a foot away from me. It was my existing computer which hadn’t been switched off for almost 3 weeks now.
As a POC, I took the cpu after shutting it off and giving it a much needed 2 min break, connected it to the tv with a vga / rgb cable which luckily was a provision on the tv and my amplifier with a line in cable that went into the sound card. I switched on the computer and the most beautiful monitor I had ever seen came to life.
As soon as windows booted, I connected the steering wheel and pedals and went straight to burn rubber off my favorite Caterham 200 in Racer 2007. The experience was amazing, but things started to go down hill, the 256mb video card couldn’t deliver the expectations I had, the resolution also was not fitting the whole screen as the maxed out resolution was 1240x1024. The sound was stereo and didn’t support the 5.1 channel surround.
It looked like I had hit the dead-end when my expectation weren’t met. Both audio and video experiences were way below my requirements. Just to see what the system was capable of, I fired up VLC player and played a NGC documentary “Planet Earth” which happened to be a .MKV file (a high definition compressed video file) and then, I realized I had come up with an amazing idea.
It was the best video quality I had seen at 1080p the experience of watching the blue earth shot from space from some goddamn Russian satellite. I had to build a more powerful version of the console and completely implement my idea of an ideal gaming console.
And that’s the configuration I went ahead with. It ended up costing a bomb. I ended up selling my bike and making my brother sponsor the wireless keyboard and mouse. Total amount spent is 23grand INR. The price was definitely worth it. Photoshop with that widescreen = Heaven. The gaming is amazing, I am playing Racer 07, Hitman (blood money), F1 2007, Super Mario (my favorite arcade game), Need for speed undercover and WRC 2005. Latest movies I have downloaded (in high definition) include – Back to the future I, II, III; Dark Knight, Matrix trilogy, Shrek trilogy, Sincity, Incredibles, Wall-E, Transformers, Kandahar and Munich.
I would definitely recommend you to make your own console instead of donating your hard earned moneys to Microsoft and Sony. It is quite simple to assemble the comp and you can always feel free to ping me for any queries.
Ok.. to be frank.. i don't earn money and i dont know much about it.. i am currently unemployed. if you could be kind enough to donate some, i will take the trouble of figuring out how esactly one can best manage it. i will then write a detailed article.. click here to donate $199. after you are done with your your good deed for the day, i will ping you when i publish this article. i promise..
My dilemma was really about whether the macbook is worth spending so much on, when there are cheaper options form dell and hp which give more for the same amount of money. I took 6 months to decide and used a range of laptops including the dell studio, HP models and a macbook Pro 15’ that my classmates had.
I am sure you guys have read countless reviews, seen all them youtube videos and I am sure you haven’t made up your mind on what to buy. Well I have been there and I know what exactly you feel like. Worst part if you are a student, your folks at home will think you are trying to make a fashion statement instead of buying the need of the hour.
I took the decision of buying the macbook overnight and was feeling little uneasy about the decision till I went and picked up my piece up. And what a piece it was.. man the first boot was really really awesome, the screen resolution and richness has to be seen first hand to believe.. only problem was the first boot was done by the apple technician and not me … man it looks stunning.. the gloss.. the white gloss…
Buying the piece itself was an adventure, when I called and booked the piece on 19th dec at the mg road i-store, they told me they don’t have stock till 26th dec, then I got the contact of one Mr. Aravind (9686685429) from Ample technologies who did his best and got me my macbook over night. Other than getting you your mac, Mr.Aravind is also very helpful with upgrades, support and APP (Apple protection program).
Now that I am united with my macbook, let me give you the specs-
The machine is really fast.. I mean lightning quick compared to a windows 7 based laptop with 4gb ram. I usually run photoshop and a couple of browsers are usually downloading installs from various sites. It does get slow when I end up running 10-15 applications, but when I mean slow, I mean the doc items will take a couple of seconds to animate. The battery backup is mind blowing, I get 5 hours on full charge (screen brightness kept at half cos full brightness will literally make you blind.) and the Mag safe power chord is pretty handy to carry around unlike the big bulky chargers from other laptop manufacturers.
Now I am simply raving about the macbook… I am patronizing it.. it does have a few problems like its only 2 usb ports, missing sd card slot, single jack for audio in and out, and the missing fire wire. I didn’t need any of these which made my decision of buying the macbook really simple. i already have a couple of desktops with high end graphics cards that i use for gaming, so the limited games (3 at the moment) made for the mac doesnt hurt me..
Here is another interesting thing.. use a macbook for a couple of days and then try using a dell or a hp or a Toshiba laptop.. you will figure the superiority of the mac toch pad.. the other laptops will feel as though the laptops have a loose connection between the touch pad and the processor.. the multi touch gestures are very very easy to get used to… I use photoshop regularly for my college assignments and also my making some quick prototypes, I bought a wireless mouse and I have probably used it twice, max for 20 min. Right click is 2 finger touch, 4 fingers will show all open apps or the desktop, depending on the direction of the finger movement.
I have used it for 2 weeks now and I have managed it to hang (apple mail didn’t respond) once, that too due to slow internet connection and about 8372 mails that it was supposed to download. Other that that occasion, its never let me down. I wont even get started on the superb keyboard, video calls on ichat and skype, the absolute silence of the machine (though it gets a little heated when used continuously for hours together) or the lightness and the ease of carrying it.
My verdict – If you are a student/normal user and have a budget of 54k, and don’t need sd card/firewire and are happy with a 13’ screen you have to buy the mac… Don’t give it a second thought.. if you are going to use high end application for video editing, 3d, I suggest you go for the 4gb ram upgrade, it will cost you about 8k extra. If you are going to buy a laptop for academics, normal computing, I completely recommend the macbook.
When a young designer has a lot of deadlines that fall on the same day, you don’t realize how time flies, hours feel like minutes, days feel like hours. What’s surprising is that you realize you have lost control of your life; there is no time for entertainment. What I prefer is playing a game of good old chess with my boss after a hearty meal. But some times when that’s not possible for obvious reasons, and it ends up being all work and no play.
Do you know what this feels like? If you do, I have the right solution for you. Its called a sony psp. If you are new to gaming or you are used to a x-box or a play station, you have to check this amazing handheld personal entertainment device.
it comes in one size – SLIM and is very comfortable when you are lost in a racing game and you have held it for hours burning rubber. What I love best about the psp is the range of games (ones you find online :-) for download, you have to change the official firmware to play these games and changing the firmware to custom firmware is quite tricky).
If you don’t want to brick your psp, there are loads of games available on small disks called UMD; ranging from arcade, first person shooter, racing to strategy games all available at mobile stores and entertainment stores near you. I have seen the best range of games at reliance digital. And I recommend Need for Speed – Carbon, and Medal of Honor – Heroes.
Its got a 3.4” crystal clear screen to view the movies you always wanted to watch or the movies that stopped showing in theatres. The device supports videos in Mp4 format and most of the hit movies are ready for download on many sites. The sound quality is simply unmatched and it supports a wide range of audio files. You can store your favorite audio and video files on a memory stick – pro duo which has a capacity up to 4 gb.
My verdict - If you feel you have no time for entertainment because of work, you now have a good reason for you to blow up a good chunk of your salary for it.
i am trying my best to make a good name in the industry, so if you have an interesting website to be made, please click here. you can also have a look at few of my past works (from 2005 - present day)
What i try to do is, Design trendy and contemperory websites and code them in accordance with w3c webstandards. I am trying my hand at Information Architecture and mobile applications.
These websites below were done for friends and well wishers and some are my moonlighting adventures :P (sorry nara)
this is a project i have been working since december 2008. well i hadn't done anything other than registering the domain and buying server space till last month. I suddenly had an urge to design and develop a wacky website that showcases my interests and works online.
the idea for the design came when i was doodling on a firend's notebook, i just illustrated the doodle, single page websites aren't very common, people usually don't like scrolling a lot (my assumption). i wanted to see if i can make this experience of browsing a single page any good.
so i started my quest of designing an experience of a practical navigation without have a conventional navigation. there were 5 sections i had thought of, and every section would have a panel from which you can navigate to other sections and to sub sections. first round of user test was done couple of weeks ago… and…
Well.. it didn't work.. i was forced to put in a defined space on the website that my visitor could use to jump between section on the page.
so here is the site… do tell me what you think about it.. if you have any suggestions please mail me..
21st Century Odyssey is Ranjana Nair's company. she makes application for touch based hardware and i think she does kick ass work along with her developers. When she gave me her brief, she wanted a site that looked very corporate and serious.
i came up with this, the design was then scrutinized by by my personal copywriter kavita and after taking in her feedback and suggestions, a final version was made and shared with ranjana. ranjana just flipped. she asked me to work on another design and threw a fit.
it took me quite some time to convince her and finally she gave a go-ahead for the development. the site was fun to work on, i have tried using interesting colours and textures. the navigation is what i really enjoyed working on. i have used one image and called it multiple times for different hover states. the site loads fast.
the amazing copy was written by my tamed copywriter who gave me a lot of content to plug in, a task that i still havent completed.. sorry Ranjana.. i will finish the sitemap as soon as i am done with this site :P
i would like to thank cssmania.com, cssdrive.com, webcreme.com and thebestdesigns.com for featuring this work on their site. on the day this site was launched, we had over 1,200 visits.
thank you guys for the support. now be nice and place some orders for touch based apps!! you can visit the site at www.xxico.com
WheelLife Travel is a very close firend's (Ganesh better known as Shabari) company. He has over 6 years experience in the travel industry where he roams the world and writes reviews and helps people plan their trips. He is a strong believer of responsible travel and advocates sustainability both to the world and for the locals of his destinations.
The project was fun to work on and i got to work closely with Ganesh and his partner Shashank who already know a lot about the web and have amazing ideas on marketing the same. The site is coded and is live, have a look at the live site here
ya.. another thing.. make sure you share your thoughts about this site.
ITS LIVE... it went live today (26th May at 15:30) i am happy.. there is nothing like designing and developing your company's website. all the running around for apporvals, content checks, taking help from team members. its worth every ounce of energy spent on the site.
i have to explain why i am so excited about it. well i dont usually get to work with the ceo of companies to design and build websties. actually thats a lie. most of my work showcased here are done for entrepreneurs. but this particular entrepreneur is different. he is Narayan Rajan, he lives a fairy tale story.. got out of college and co-founded a company now after 13 years, its worth an amount with the number big enought to exhausts my counting ability.
while working closely with him, i learnt many swear words (ones he used on me) and also learnt that making things simple is never easy. see this site for example. its got 2 sections "Digital marketing" and "Technology", because the company has 2 teams.. Digital Marketing and Technology. once you select one of the tabs, the tab gets an arrow to show you that you in the selected section of the site. the secondary navigation is of the colour of the tab you have chosen. the two sections are completely identical.. ok.. this is hard to explain.. please have a look for yourself - www.ivistasolutions.com
this is a company i have worked for 5 years. it has some of the most amazing people you can meet. they are an online marketing company and they focusing on using social media for marketing. some of their clients that i can remember right now are - Oberoi Hotels, Trident Hotels, Spice Jet, i-Gate, Cequity, Oracle, Manthri Group. they are currently looking for people with a keen interest in pushing the boundaries of internet. if you feel you are up to the task, you can apply by clicking here
NanoCell is a Telecom Training and Certification institue run by a friend Mr.Devdas Pai. We are finetuning the design for his webstie. but.. do have a look at the design image here
here is what the site should look like.. once developed.. if you have any suggestions please mail me.
This was one of the most interesting site i have worked on.. to begin with.. there was no bief, just a 10 slide presentation which had the content in it. i was asked to design something with out any images in it... i how ever wanted to try and make a page with 2 slanting stack of paper which expands with the content. and again a navitaion with a single image like i did in xxico.com.
so here is the site… do tell me what you think about it.. if you have any suggestions please mail me..
i enjoy spending time with with these guys, usually over a mug of beer. if you have the time, do read about them. Because people don't judge a person by their friends:)
If you want to be my friend, click here. the annual friendship subscription is just $199.
Nithin Rao Kumblekar.. no i don't call him that.. i call him "Maplo" for certain reasons that i don't want to mention here. i would like to be known as his drinking partner and best friend. anyone else would have introduced him for his amazing illustration and graphic designing skills, but not me..
having known him for more than a decade now, his instant sense of humor and his sarcastic comments; i feel are far greater than his sketching talent. but then.. you guys can take a call for yourself, have a look at his deviant art album - artistneetu.deviantart.com and you can probably send him a comment on his works by mail - nithinraok@gmail.com
he is currently freelancing from home which makes it very convenient for me to drop in and check our his latest work.
when he is not changing his profile pics he enjoys watching tv shows and art movies. His hobbies include visiting new places, photography, making carricatures and painting.
She is currently doing her masters in Design management in Bermingham University which is some where near Texas, in Africa.
She is my junior form graduation and a very close friend, i just haven't figured how to lie to her.. she catches me every time i attempt it… other than this amazing skill, she is a budding designer, loves eating biryani and kababs at Nagarjuna which is her favorite hotel in Bangalore.
Her friendship subscription has been suspended and i am waiting for her to renew it soon, a grace period of 6 months has been allocated to her. if she doesn't renew it by October 2010, this section of my website is up for grabs :P
i want to bring this to your attention! read her name again.. its KAVITA with out a "H" in it.. just wanted to bring this to your attention.. thats all.. she would definitely have done the same.
Kavita Srinivasan is my chat buddy and my personal copy writer. she is also my movie buddy and my spell check and my dictionary and my thesaurus.
currently she's working at Ogilvy with my ex-boss, i can talk to her about any subject to get a proper researched; wiki validated reply. She is a compulsive blogger and loves reading… usually its thing that i cant comprehend. leisure travel is a monthly affair for her and she has many stamps on her passport.
its easy to make her smile and even easier to get her spirits up.. both spirits :P if kavita was a dictator, she would abolish religion and poverty and she would ensure making spelling mistakes is punishable by death. now you know what my nightmares are like.
all in all she is a bindaz girl. loves making new friends, traveling and being in high spirits. her latest challenge is to put Jonathan Strauss to shame.. yes she is taking piano classes.
you can reach out to her on her blog - Interpretations.
Sudesh Nayak; popularly called nayak. i met the chap in out local GYM about 10 years ago. we started working out together and then became good friends.. later we discovered that we are related.. he happens to be my long lost uncle..
working out with him was frustrating. we both lifted the same weights, did the same number of sets; but i never put on a single gram where as nayak was buying new clothes as they were getting small with every passing month. what i conclude from 5 years of gyming with Sudesh is that; if you want to put on weight, have me as your gym partner.
Sudesh has amazing sense of humor and an unbelievable appetite for chicken kababs. our usual drill was going to moonlight (a local restaurant near our place) and munch a lot of chicken delicacies.
Sudesh currently is working at Protek Devices, he is living in Arizona with his wife Priya.
you can reach out Nayak at his linkedin profile.
Karthik is like a brother to me. we literally grew up together. i have spent more time at his place during my schooling than i have at my own. his family has done a great deal in my upbringing and i am thankful to them for having taken care of me for all those years.
to tell you what karthik is all about, i will tell you how he treated his brand new computer, mind you this was in 1997 when 586 was the fastest computer yet. his computer how ever, had open side panels, he used to use his hard disks like they were plug and play thumb drives. computer genius is what my family calls him…
he is currently completing his phd at TTI university in Chicago and is on his way to Israel to present his latest paper on fuzzy logic.
if you want to find out how your intel chip works, or you want to understand what string in string theory is all about, you can ping him - by clicking here
Ranjana is my favorite client. not for the fact that she pays on time, not because she is buying me an iphone when she returns from netherlands.. but because she is co-operative and because she lets me experiment. i definitely wouldn't have said this about her 3 years back when i used to work with her. we were like oil and water. we have to fight with each other every single day else both of us dont feel we had attended work. now that we don't work together anymore, things are different..
she has now started her own company - 21st Century Odyssey (xxico.com) and is currently in Dubai making friends with rich people and getting them to invest in her service.
Ranjana i wish you luck and i am waiting for you to return with my iphone. it was great fun working with you on your site. please ping me when you think it needs a facelift :P
Well, i am regarded as perhaps the most influential character in the history of interaction design, mostly in my delusions. i am a gadget freak. i rock at chess and i get very upset when asked to write a sentence without a spelling mistake. i have an unhealthy obsession with the Internet, and have filled three of my hard-disks with torrents downloads and just bought my fourth. i have a radio-controlled chopper that i can’t fly without crashing. i spend more time driving ‘in games’ than in traffic. Besides these, in real life, i can’t jump traffic signals, i have 3 lovely nieces whom i cant do without and i have never told a lie (debatable, i admit).
my interests are comics, games, movies, OST music, surfing the World Wide Web, meeting people, making simple illustrations and teaching kids annoying things that they can do.
i love watching top gear, and i think i can kick stig's ass in need for speed underground. other tv shows i trip on are - Two and a half men, Coupling, Titus, Big Bang Theory and Spartacus.
want to know more about me, please write me a mail.
Yes.. you heard it right. my friendship is for sale.. just $199. not interested? ok.. no issues.. you can still ping me if you have a project you want me to work on, or you just want to tell me something... just drop me a mail using the form below. i love getting mails on my phone.
